Flattening the World

The World is Flat

Thomas Friedman has written a book called The World is Flat. In it he contends that the US has lost its grip on technology and development in the world.

Watch the video. Download and save, it is big - it will take time. This will play with the free VLC media player. (download here) Watch from minute 4 to minute 48. I encourage you to watch the rest of the video as well, it is quite interesting. Especially the first question and how Ramadan in Egypt is an example of the world being flat. (if you can't download the video, you honestly tried and it won't download - though there is no reason in the world it won't if you wait long enough, watch this video. It isn't exactly the same but should help with most of the questions.)

  1. Friedman mentions that starting in 2000 the world entered a period he calls Globalization 3.0. Who is at the forefront of this shrinking and flattening of the world?
  2. Which nationalities is 3.0 going to be built around? What is the only requirement for them?
  3. He mentions 10 "flatteners" - which one did you find the most interesting and why? You might want to jot them down as you watch.
  4. What do you think? Is he right? What does this mean for the world? Is the world going Horizontal?
